For centuries, the Grand Puzzle Tower had stood as an unsolved mystery. Built by an eccentric noble who valued intelligence above all else, the tower was said to contain the greatest collection of knowledge in history. But to reach it, one had to solve a series of intricate riddles and puzzles, each more challenging than the last. Many had tried. None had succeeded—until now.
Elliot adjusted the straps on his pack as he and his two companions approached the base of the towering stone structure. The air smelled of damp stone and aged parchment. Beside him, Orla, a methodical thinker with a keen eye for patterns, examined the large iron door in front of them. Jonah, the youngest of the group but by far the fastest with numbers, skimmed through a notebook filled with notes from past explorers.
“No handle, no keyhole,” Orla muttered, running her fingers over the engraved surface. “It must be another riddle.”
Jonah flipped a page. “According to the old records, every entrance is locked by logic. Look for an inscription.”
Elliot stepped closer, brushing dust away from the center of the door. Slowly, faintly, letters began to appear, forming a question:
“I have cities, but no houses. I have mountains, but no trees. I have water, but no fish. What am I?”
Elliot grinned. “A classic. It’s a map.”
The moment he spoke, a deep, echoing click sounded from within the door. Gears turned, stone grated against stone, and then, with a groan, the entrance swung open, revealing a dimly lit corridor lined with old torches.
“Well,” Jonah said, tucking his notebook under his arm. “No turning back now.”
The three stepped inside, their footsteps echoing as they entered the tower. The walls were lined with carved stone panels, each depicting symbols and numbers arranged in strange patterns. At the far end of the hall, another door stood closed, a brass mechanism set into its center. A small plaque below it read:
“I speak without a mouth and hear without ears. I am invisible, yet I leave words behind. What am I?”
Orla tapped her chin. “This one’s trickier.”
“Not really,” Elliot said, already stepping forward. “It’s an echo.”
As soon as he finished speaking, the brass mechanism shifted, and the door creaked open.
Jonah let out a low whistle. “If it’s this easy, I don’t see why no one’s solved the whole thing yet.”
Elliot and Orla exchanged a look. “We’re just getting started,” Orla said.
And with that, the three ventured deeper into the Grand Puzzle Tower, where more challenges—and greater mysteries—awaited.
