Evan couldn’t move.
The whisper slid into the hallway like a breath of cold air, soft but impossible to ignore. His skin prickled.
Beside him, Maya looked completely unaffected.
“…Evan?” she said. “You’re freaking me out.”
“You really don’t hear that?” he asked.
“Hear what?”
The gap in the door widened.
Two inches.
The darkness inside didn’t look like a room. It looked deep — like a tunnel stretching far beyond the limits of the school.
Evan’s pulse hammered.
Every sound in the hallway felt distant now, muffled, as though he were standing underwater. Even the fluorescent lights seemed dimmer near the door.
He took a cautious step forward.
The air turned icy.
His breath fogged faintly.
“Okay… that’s not normal,” he whispered.
The whispering grew clearer, though the words still made no sense. It sounded like many voices layered together, speaking just beyond understanding.
Evan hesitated.
Then, unable to resist, he reached out.
The door’s surface was warm.
Strangely warm.
The contrast sent a jolt through his hand.
Behind him, Maya sighed. “I’m going to class. Whatever joke this is, it’s not funny.”
Evan barely heard her.
He pushed.
The door swung open effortlessly.
And the hallway vanished.
There was no falling sensation this time — only a sudden, weightless lurch, as if the world had been pulled out from under him.
Darkness swallowed everything.
Then—
Light.
Blinding. White. Endless.
Evan stumbled forward and collapsed onto solid ground, gasping.
Slowly, his vision cleared.
He wasn’t in school anymore.
He was standing in the middle of an enormous open field beneath a sky swirling with unfamiliar colors.
And behind him…
The gray door stood alone.
Waiting.
