Once upon a time there was a boy named Evan and Evan was packing for school on Tuesday morning. Tuesday mornings were Evan’s least favorite.
The alarm rang too early. The air was too cold. And the walk to Westbrook Middle School always felt longer than it actually was.
He dragged himself out of bed, half-awake, and shuffled through the usual routine — backpack, hoodie, cereal he barely tasted.
Outside, the world was perfectly ordinary.
Cars passed.
Neighbors walked dogs.
Nothing strange. Nothing unusual.
By the time Evan reached school, the hallways buzzed with the usual chaos — lockers slamming, friends laughing, someone running despite the rules clearly saying no running.
Normal.
Completely normal.
Until Evan turned the corner on the second floor.
And stopped.
Between the science lab and the janitor’s closet stood something that absolutely, positively did not belong there.
A door.
Tall. Narrow. Painted gray.
No window.
No handle.
Just a door sitting in a section of wall Evan had passed hundreds of times before.
He frowned.
“…What?”
Students walked by without reacting. No one slowed. No one stared. No whispers. No confusion.
It was as if the door didn’t exist.
Evan rubbed his eyes.
Still there.
His friend Maya nearly collided with him.
“Why did you stop?”
Evan pointed.
“That.”
Maya looked directly at the spot.
“There’s nothing there.”
Evan’s stomach tightened.
“No, the door.”
“What door?”
And before he could respond—
The gray surface trembled.
A soft creak split the air.
And the door slowly opened one inch.
From the darkness beyond came a whisper.
but that’s a story for another day!
