âItâs really coming down out there!â I exclaimed as the people in the RV watched the rain come down in torrents, soaking the country around us.
We were in Gillette, Wyoming, for the International Pathfinder Camporee. Ten people crowded the relatively small RV. We had rented two RVs instead of buying tents and we were a welcome shelter for two people, Gemma* and Mrs. Het, who needed shelter from the storm. We had one tent with us too. My sister, Christena, had broken out her earpods and was playing Sunshine Girl, funnily enough. The rest of us were busy playing Hedbanz.
I now watched as the flimsy boysâ tent flapped in the 60 plus mile an hour winds. Mrs. Mershot, Amy M., Mrs. Het, Gemma, I, Christena, Abitha, Nina, Amy B., and Karrie all were in one RV while my dad, Mrs. Hill, Mr. Hill (both our Pathfinder leaders), and Mr. Het were in the other. We believed the three boys, Brandon, Timothy, and Ryan, to be in the tent.
We played Hedbanz with some funny outtakes. We couldnât decide if a turkey was a mammal or not, and Amy B. replied to Abitha asking if a giraffe was a food, âYouâd have to be crazy to eat that!â Christena looked at the storm, daydreaming.
All of a sudden, I looked at Abitha. She was looking out of the window, crying.
âItâs OK, Abitha,â I consoled. âThe storm will pass, and weâll all be fine. No oneâs going to get hurt.â What she said next surprised me.
âIâm not worried for me,â Abitha sobbed, âIâm worried for my brother.â
Everyone looked again at the flapping tent that looked like it could fly away any second. Tears came to my own eyes. Abitha wasnât worried for herself; she was worried for Ryan! I think thatâs how God wants us all to be.
âDo you want me to call him?â Nina asked. âI can call Timothy, and he can put Ryan on.â
Abitha nodded and Nina somehow got a call through in the thousands of teens who mustâve been on their phones.
âHey,â Timothy said.
âHi, Timothy,â Nina replied. âIs Ryan there?â
âYeah, heâs here,â Timothy answered.
âCan Abitha talk to him, please?â Nina requested.
âOf course,â Timothy said and Nina handed the phone to Abitha.
âHello?â Abitha asked.
âAbitha?â Ryan replied.
âHow are you?â Abitha wanted to know.
âOh, Iâm fine,â Ryan replied, surprisingly calm. I furrowed my brow. Iâd be freakinâ out if I was in that tent!
Abitha furrowed her brow too. âWhere are you?â she wondered.
âOh, in the other RV. Mr. and Mrs. Hill called us in,â Ryan replied nonchalantly. He said it like it had been the most natural thing in the world.
âWell, Iâm glad they did,â Abitha nodded and handed the phone back to Nina.
I couldnât tell what Nina and Timothy were talking about but I noticed they stayed on the phone for quite a long time. Finally, Nina put Timothy on speakerphone and said, âTimothyâs gonna pray.â
âDear God,â the raspy and barely audible voice came out of the phone, âplease keep us safe. Please keep everyone safe! We trust you, God, and that you know whatâs best. Amen.â
The storm ended, everyone was safe, and, even though the Believe the Promise wasnât about Noah, a double rainbow lit up the sky to remind us all that God looks after us. I know that if you were there, you probably had a rough and scary time too. Storm shelters, flooded tents, and cardboard bridges in the international section! But the rainbow was a reassuring and powerful message. We got a double blessing with our double rainbow. It reminded us to be selfless, and that blessing was Abithaâs tears for Ryan.

Cool story! I was at Gillette too, and boy was it wet! Lucky for me my tent was only wet at the door. Unlucky for my friends, they had new swimming area in their tent. The other girls in my Pathfinder club found their makeup taking a swim.
đ A new swimming area?? đđ
Wow was this a trip down memory lane! I was in the ARK-LA Conference Section when the storm absolutely slammed us. We saw tents, canopies, and other things flying around us, but somehow, our camp was completely fine. God truly is amazing!
Same! God IS amazing. The double rainbow was also like a double promise. â¤ď¸
No kidding! A guy came around and told us, âIf starts flying, get down.â I couldnât IMAGINE getting down with 10 people in one RV with little floor space. At least we werenât in a tentâŚ
Sorry, I meant, âIf stuff starts flyingâŚâ
This event definitely created lots of new memories for me! Because of the storm we had to leave our sight when we were in the middle of eating supper. We came back and our plates and everything were filled with water.
Glad at least YOU were safe even if it spoiled your dinner!
Wow. This is a trip down memory lane. My club was blessed to get a hotel and went back before the rain hit. Yeah, I heard quite the crazy stories. Iâm blessed every one was safe. God is powerful!!
Wait, no one went into the big building when the tornado was about to hit?
I heard some people went to âstorm shelters.â We were in the RV so I donât know what those were.
My club was about to twice, but both times we just all went into our kitchen tent and held on to all four corners with our lives…it was exhilarating!
Wouldâve hated being in that club! Good thing you guys were safe.
That sounds exciting but probably really scary
This was a trip down memory lane! I prayed to God to keep us safe and I actually asked for the rainbow! Didnât think we were gonna get the double lol! Me, my dad, and my sister visited the international section and it was a mud pit that they called a campground! There were cardboard bridges everywhere and tents were flooded! At least nobody was seriously injured! The rainbow was really apropos since our theme was Believe the Promise!
FYI, thatâs my sister whoâs Chloe.
lol!
I sent in a REALLY good story! Hope they accept it and post it! Fingers crossed and keep your eyes open! Itâs called The Fantasy Queen
