On the Run from the War Chapter 1

It was a foggy and cold day it was the day my dad came with the news that would change my life Dad was going to war. It was September 19th,1940 when Great Britain joined World War II.

My Mum sobbing, asked my dad “When will you be going to war?”

“Tomorrow” dad replied

I shoved my dinner plate aside, and darted to my room. I threw myself on my bed crying. I felt like the whole world was against me.

Then my older (ONLY BY 10 SECONDS) twin brother Peter came in our room and sat on his bed, and said “No need to worry great Britain has the strongest Navy in the world the war will be over in time Tom.”

I relaxed a little, it was true we had the strongest Navy. Peter was right the war would be over no time.

Peter smiled smugly and said “I remember when I came here when I was your age you were crying like a little baby.”

I leap from my bed in glare at him “That was only 10 seconds ago” I retorted angrily.

“So?” Peter asked.

I huffed, “I’m NOT a baby” I say under my breath, and I slumped back into my bed.

Mom peeked into my room with her tear streaked face, and said “Bedtime! Have a good night!” she tried to respond in a cheery tone but and but failed horribly with the crack in her voice. And with that she closed the door.

“Turn off the lights please.” I said; “I’m tired.”

He took a long look at me with a puzzle expression in his face. Then got up and turned the lights off, and got into his bed.

When we were about to sleep when dad came in and shook us and asked “Are you guys awake?”

“Yeah.” me and my brother replied at the same time.

He reached into his pocket and said “There’s something I need to give you, something I should told you long time ago.” And he pulled out a letter.
