I leaned in. Dust exploded into the air, making me cough and stagger back. I turned aside and ruffled through my bag.
“I need to find my flashlight.” I muttered.
Then I heard someone knocking on a door downstairs.
Then I heard Lowella’s soft voice. “Sunny, is this your room?’
I heard a squeak of a door opening, then Sara’s voice. “Nope, it’s mine.”
I took a deep breath. I looked from left to right, she was looking for me and she would eventually find me. How would I hide a hole in the wall? I heard footsteps on the stairs.
Just then Lowella knocked on my door. “Sunny?” She asked.
I stayed silent, thinking.
“Sunny?” Lowell asked again.
I sighed. “Yes Lowella?” It would have come to it sooner or later.
“Can I come in?” She asked.
“Why?” I asked, annoyed.
“Well, you did make a deal. I need to see if this room is good enough.” She said
“It’s good enough. And if it’s good enough for me, it’s good enough for you.” I retorted.
“You still haven’t answered my question.” Lowella said. “Can I come in?” She asked again.
“Ummm….” I said looking around.
My bedside table is small enough to move, but big enough to cover the hole.
“Wait a second!” I hollered.
I grunted as I picked up the table stand and moved it over the hole. As soon as that was finished I quickly grabbed my bag and poured it on my bed to make it look like I was unpacking.
“Sure.” I finally said.
She turned the doorknob “Sunny, I’m not joking. Open the door, it’s locked.”
I giggled At the absurdity of it all. I hadn’t remembered that I had locked the door. I got up and opened the door.
“Sorry.” I said. “I’d forgotten I had locked it.”
She looked around and gasped. “How it’s so big.” She remarked.
I laughed.
“Seriously, Sunny, you got the best room.” She said, looking sternly at me.
I looked at her with wide eyes. “Seriously? I thought you guys all got the best room before I could look through it. I just got the last room that was available.” I said
“Oh my gosh, wait till I tell everyone else.” She said as ran out of the room.
I took a big sigh as I heard her holler. “Sunny’s got the best room! Come see!”
Soon enough, all my siblings came running up.
Mike was the first one up. “Seriously Sunny?” He turned to me. “How did you get the best room?”
“I don’t know, I just got the last room.” I said truthfully.
Arthur, always a sly one, turned to me and said. “No, I’ve got a better room. Would you like to trade Sunny?”
“Hardy har, very funny.” I said. “I saw your room while I passed by. It doesn’t have a half bathroom. Well, what are you guys staring here for? Let me unpack. You’ve got to unpack too, no doubt.” I said, trying to hurry them out. I had to figure out what was in that secret compartment.
“I still don’t get it. How did Sunny get the best room?” Sarah said to Catherine.
“I already told you like a million times. Sunny is lucky. It even rhymes. “Catherine replied.
After a fair amount of time, I finally got them booted out of my room. I walked over to the door, closed it and locked it. I pulled away the bedside table to reveal the small compartment door. I inspected it closely to figure out how to close it. After a fair amount of trying, I figured out that it was a magnet, so just a slight touch would make it tumble. I got up, went to my bed and looked through my dumped things.
” Aha!” as I found what I was looking for. I lifted up a flashlight triumphantly.
Hmm, what else would I need? I looked through my things.
Clothes no, well, I don’t need anything but my flashlight, I thought.
At last I crawled inside. When I turned on the flashlight I gasped. It was like a living room. I looked around, in the middle there was a table. With two quite comfortable chairs. There were curtains on the far side of the room. And shelves on one side and a desk on the other. And on the corner to my right there was a staircase. I stayed frozen for what seemed like hours taking it all in.
Finally, I walked across the room and pulled open the curtains. It was a glass window, I don’t know how you couldn’t see it from outside. It showed the view of the entire estate. It was beautiful. I looked closer. I saw the animals. I saw the sheep. I saw the barn. I saw the horse. My flashlight clattered to the floor bringing me back to reality. I bent down to pick it up. I wouldn’t need it anymore. The windows were so big it flooded light into the entire room. Looking around looking for something to explore, I finally decided to go and see where the stairs led to. At the end of the stairs, there’s a door. I tried it to open it and it’s jammed. I look around. And looked closer at the hinges.
“Uh…” I muttered. “Does it have to be rusty? Now I need to go downstairs and get some oil — IF we have any.”
I went down the stairs to explore some more, before finding some oil.
I started looking at the books on the shelves. All classics. But there’s something I hadn’t noticed. A lever. With a great hesitation, I finally pulled it down. The door above the stairs opened and revealed a secret compartment with several shelves. I peered into the second compartment. And see a big stand with a huge open book on top. Curious, I lean forward and lift the covers to see the name.
Biblia Sacra.
I gasped. I knew very little of Latin. But this I understood. I quickly removed my hand. I looked around and quickly backed out and closed the entrance. I ran to the small opening to my room and slipped out.
I looked at the contents of my bag and ruffled through it till I found what I was looking for, my phone. I quickly searched for Latin Bibles. And I found loads of them for sale. But none of them were the ones I had, and all of them were new. Paperbacks and hard covers and brand new. Not the old leather covered one I had. I searched some more. And put in the words “old leather covered Bible.” I found a couple of similar ones. The 36-line Bible, The 1462 Bible, Mentelin Bibleand finally, the Gutenberg Bible.
I took in a in a big breath. Gutenberg Bible. I had heard of Gutenberg Bibles but had not learned much about them. But then again, it couldn’t be a Gutenberg Bible because they had already found all them. And I had never heard of these other Bibles. I quickly gave up because curiosity got ahold of me.
I slipped back inside the hole. I took a quick glance around to make sure everything was in place, and ran up the stairs. The door was already open ’cause I had opened the window with the leather, but I paused just to make sure that it wasn’t gonna close when I turned my back. I jammed it open with a rag I found. It was a door to the roof? I walked slowly. It had like, I don’t know, a rail on the top of the roof where you could hold on with on both sides of your hands. Had you had rails and a slender path on top of the roof? I had just assumed that the rails were just decoration when I had drove up. I had no idea. That it was an actual path. I walked across to find a door. I tried opening the door. The handle turned, but the door didn’t open. Finally I decided to run into it and try to break it open. I ran at it full speed. And the impact was pretty hard. My shoulder made sure to tell me that. I collapsed to the floor, clutching my shoulder.
“What was I thinking?” I muttered.
I heard a erie creek, and looked up and gasped to see the door slowly opening.
I got up, slowly dragging myself. I had to be cautious. I peered in to find ventilation vents all around. The door didn’t close because it was jammed with another rag that was left on the floor, right behind the door. At least I didn’t have to get it.
I got down on my knees, and I slid down this hole that looked like a slide. As I slid down, I figured out the long ventilation lines. I spread my hands and feet to stop myself by clutching on the metal. Finally, I squeaked to stop. I peered in one of the vents to see Sarah unpacking. But she heard the creak of me coming to a stop. She turned.
I stayed quiet.
She sighed and muttered “Old vents.” She turned back to unpacking.
I slowly slid to the next vent. I peeked in. Sure enough, there was Dad and Lowella. Dad was helping Lowell unpack. This time, though, I was more silent, so no one heard me.
I slid to the next vent. Mike’s room the next. Arthur’s room the next. Catherine room and I guessed the next room was dad’s since his bags were in it. The slide just went longer and longer.
All of a sudden I noticed something. How was I supposed to get back up? I looked side to side frantically and tried to scramble up but it was futile. The metal was slick and smooth. I started panicking . How could I do it? I looked down. Should I go down or should I try to go back up?
