I look at my mom, her face pale.
” Hold on, Mama.” I plead.
The doctor walks in, “There is nothing we can do,” he says. “We’ll send her home, and we’ll give her some comfort.”
” No!” I scream. “You have to help her.”
“There’s nothing more I can do,” the doctor replies calmly.
My Siblings all around me start crying. My dad looks shocked, angry, sad.
Finally, my mother opens her eyes. She says she raises a hand. “Sunny.” she whispers.
I grab her hand tightly. My siblings all start talking at once. Slowly, my dad makes my way to her and held her other hand .
“What’s happening?” She asks.
It was Lowella who choked out an answer. “You’re not gonna make it, that’s what the doctor says. But we’re gonna pray. Pray, and then you’ll become well.”
“Some things have to happen Lowella,” my mom says softly. “Some things have to happen; we don’t have control over it.”
Then with that she closes her eyes. The blood pressure machine starts beeping. Everyone goes silent. It couldn’t be, could it?
I feel a sharp pain on my stomach.
I gasp and open my eyes.
It was just a nightmare from the past.
I look at my stomach. My cat, Purl, is purring to her heart’s content. I push her off, turning I look to the side where the Lowella’s bed is. She’s peacefully sleeping.
If I make good breakfast, everyone will just be in a good mood and so everyone will forget about last night. I think, tiptoeing out the door.
Just as I was almost to the stairs, I tripped. Landing with a thud. I roll over and groan. Godiva, my chocolate brown Pomeranian, looks at me with a dark look. It seemed to be asking, why did you trip on me?
“You need to get out of the way once in a while, Godiva,” I whisper. “I’m trying to be sneaky here.”
Just then, I hear noises downstairs. Men’s voices. I tiptoed down the stairs and down the hallway. I peered into our living room. I couldn’t believe what I saw! Two men packing up our couches, our tables, our lamps, everything! I start backing up and bump into something. Turning around, I see it is Dad.
“What’s happening?” I ask.
“Well, my boss asked me to leave earlier than expected.” He answered.
“But yesterday, you told us we were living in one month!” I gasped, revolted.
He laughs. “Yeah, he asked me last night to leave in a week, not in a month, so we had to speed up the move. So, I called them guys to come pack up.”
I look at him in disbelief. So much for a good morning. I think. At least I can do the breakfast.
I walk in the kitchen and open the cupboards. No pancake mix. Nothing.
Dad walks in and looks at the open cupboard. “Yeah, we already packed the kitchen. There’s milk and there is cereal if you want it.” He says.
I sigh. “Have you gotten our pets, their passports?” I ask.
“Yeah, they’re coming tomorrow.” He answers.
I pack my cereal into a tray with a glass of milk, and I make way for the snug. The snug is the library, but we call it a snug ’cause it’s so cozy.
I walk down the hall.
When I’m about to enter the Snug, something rams into me, and I go flying.
To be continued.
