The Hidden Treasure, Chapter 1

Once upon a time, there was a girl named Ruth who loved finding old things.

While other kids spent summer afternoons inside, Ruth liked exploring her grandmother’s attic, searching through old boxes, dusty books, and forgotten family keepsakes.

One hot Saturday morning, Ruth climbed the attic ladder with a flashlight in one hand and a bottle of water in the other.

The attic smelled like old wood and cardboard.

Sunlight came through the small round window, lighting up tiny bits of dust floating in the air.

Ruth knelt beside an old wooden trunk in the far corner.

She had seen it before, but never opened it.

The latch was stiff, but after a hard pull—

creak

the trunk opened.

Inside were:

  • old photo albums
  • yellowed letters
  • a folded quilt
  • and a small tin box

Ruth picked up the tin box.

It was rusty around the edges, but still shut tight.

She opened it carefully.

Inside was a folded paper and a brass key.

Her heart beat faster.

“A key?” she whispered.

She unfolded the paper.

It wasn’t a letter.

It was a map.

Not a perfect map—but a hand-drawn one.

There was a sketch of her grandmother’s backyard, the old apple tree, the stone birdbath, and the fence by the garden.

And in one corner, written in neat handwriting, were the words:

“For the one who loves to search.”

Ruth stared at it.

Then she looked at the brass key in her hand.

This wasn’t random.

Someone had hidden something.

And they wanted it to be found.

Ruth raced downstairs and out into the yard.

The sun was bright now, and the grass felt warm under her shoes.

She unfolded the map and compared it to the yard.

The apple tree—there.

The birdbath—there.

The garden fence—there.

Then she noticed a little “X” drawn near the very back corner of the yard, close to the old tool shed.

Ruth hurried over.

At first, she didn’t see anything.

Just dirt, weeds, and a stack of flowerpots.

Then she spotted it.

A flat stone, partly hidden in the grass.

She knelt down and pulled it aside.

Underneath was a small metal handle built into a square wooden hatch.

Ruth’s eyes widened.

“No way.”

She grabbed the handle and pulled.

The hatch lifted with effort.

Under it was a narrow wooden box tucked into the ground.

And right on the front of the box…

A tiny keyhole.

Ruth looked down at the brass key in her hand.

And smiled
