Chap. 3: The Test Beneath the Stones

The figure stepped back, and the blue light brightened, as if the cavern itself had taken a breath.

“Follow me,” he said.

I hesitated, my legs still shaky. But my heart? It was steadying.

We walked deeper into the cavern, the glowing carvings casting soft light on the path. The air smelled of stone and something older—like forgotten prayers.

As we turned a corner, the tunnel opened into a circular chamber. In the center stood a pedestal made of glassy black rock. On top of it lay an object wrapped in faded cloth.

The figure motioned toward it. “Your first task.”

I stepped forward slowly. The moment my fingers touched the cloth, the chamber trembled. Not violently—but like the earth itself was listening.

I unwrapped it.

A key. Old, bronze, covered in swirls and tiny crosses etched along the edges.

“It opens more than doors,” the figure said quietly. “It opens truth. But it must never fall into the wrong hands.”

Before I could ask what that meant, the walls around us shimmered.

Images formed in the stone: a girl who looked like me, running through woods on fire. A door slamming shut. A voice crying out, “You must choose!”

I stumbled back. “What is this?”

“Possibilities,” the figure said. “Choices waiting to be made. The forest above is changing. Darkness is waking. But you—you’re part of the answer.”

My hands trembled around the key.

Suddenly, a new voice echoed through the cavern—harsh, mocking.

“She’s too late.”

From the shadows on the far side, a dark shape emerged. Cloaked in smoke. Eyes glowing red like dying embers.

The peaceful glow flickered.

The figure stepped in front of me. “You weren’t supposed to find this place.”

“She was called,” the figure said firmly. “By the One who made this ground holy.”

The dark figure snarled. “Then let’s see if her faith can stand the trial.”

The cavern cracked—literally. A stone split open beneath our feet, revealing another staircase spiraling downward into nothing but black.

The figure turned to me. “This is the test, Mari.”

I looked down.

No end in sight.

Just the echo of my heartbeat and the silent weight of a decision.

“Will you face the dark to protect the light?”

I stared at the key.

At the stairwell.

And then I stepped forward.
