Proverbs 9:6 – Free-throws

It takes a special talent to sink 34 free throws in a row.  It takes an even more inspiring kid like Jordan Bohannon to miss the 35th.

University of Iowa point guard, Jordan Bohannon, was in the zone.  He’d hit 34 straight free throws and was at the line to sink his 35th in a tight game against Northwestern.  His next free throw wouldn’t just extend the Iowa lead, it would also make history.

In 1993, Iowa Forward Chris Street set the school record for consecutive free throws made at 34.  Chris would have tried to top that number, but the night before his team was scheduled to play again, Chris’ car hit a snow plow, killing him and injuring his girlfriend.

Jordan had the opportunity to break it his 25-year-old record. Jordan missed the shot on purpose.
When asked why he missed on purpose Jordan responded “It was the right thing to do.”

His only concern was that it would hurt his team if they were losing the game or it was a close game.  Jordan called his brother, former Wisconsin forward Zach Bohannon, for counsel.  His brother told him simply, “You’ll know what to do.” This is a great example of a great person making a great choice.
The greatest power we have in our lives are our choices. As Christians, this should always involve choosing to do the right thing. In any discussion about doing the right thing, we must also bring up the world love. This is because God’s love for us and our love for him compels us to want to do good as well. We love and serve others, because He first loved us. Provers 9:6 reads “Leave your simple ways, and live, and walk in the way of insight.”
Jesus is our ultimate example of always doing the right thing. He lived his life to obey the Father in every way, and he was always doing worthy causes everywhere He went. As Christians and followers of Christ, we should seek to do the right thing in every situation.
