This is the story of our chocolate Lab, Molly, my little sister of a different species. She’s more the color of caramel than chocolate. Here’s how we got her. My dad was working on his client’s computer when the woman started to cry.

“What’s the matter?” asked my dad.

Chocolate Lab puppy “My neighbor has a litter of chocolate Labs, and tomorrow he’s going to kill the runt,” the woman told him.

After Dad finished the job he bought the runt, Molly, from the breeder. Meanwhile my mom bought a kennel and picked up my little brother, Nathaniel, and me from our grandma’s. When I saw the kennel in the car, I asked Mom, “What’s that for?”

“I bought it for a friend,” she replied.

When we reached home we started our normal activities. Nathaniel and I sat in front of the TV while Mom cooked. Then Dad came home. When we ran out to greet him, he grabbed something brown from the car. Nathaniel and I got closer to see what it was. It was a puppy—the cutest puppy I had ever seen!

I wanted to name it, but Molly was already a great name for the puppy. She was shy for the first three days of being in a new home. But after that she loved us.

We rescued Molly; then she rescued Dad! Molly was 1 year old the night it happened. Dad was installing our new satellite dish with the help of two friends from church. Molly began licking Dad’s hand, jumping, and not leaving Dad alone. Dad thought that Molly was bugging him and told her to lie down. In reality, she knew something that he didn’t.

Chocolate Lab puppy At 6:30 Dad started having a seizure. He stiffened up and started shaking. I was upstairs at the time and went downstairs to see what all the commotion was. Mom screamed, “Watch for the ambulance!” Mom never yelled at me like that, so it was pretty scary.

After the ambulance came, a neighbor took Nathaniel and me in for the night. We later learned that during the seizure Dad had had a stroke (a blood clot in the brain), but he had survived. I bless the Lord for Molly—she helped save Dad’s life!

Now we live in Minnesota, and my dad keeps on having seizures. But Molly keeps telling him when he’s going to have one. Now he listens to Molly! I will always believe that God sent Molly to us.
