Beetle power! Some tiger beetles can run at a speed of two feet per second. To cover the same distance in relation to its size, a racehorse would have to run 250 miles an hour. --National Geographic

Internet Savvy

My dad used to say, “If you don’t want everyone to read it, don’t write it down.” I learned this lesson the hard way when my little brother shared my diary with all his friends in the boys’ restroom at school. It was the most embarrassing moment of my life.

That’s why I am amazed that so many kids write down personal stuff about themselves and put it on the Internet for everyone to see! Although most Guide-age kids aren’t old enough for MySpace and Facebook, there are plenty of other sites where you can share your ideas, pictures, and feelings.

So remember: once it’s out there, you can’t take it back. One embarrassing photo, one thoughtless comment, one slip with personal information, and the consequences can range from humiliation to actual physical danger.

But don’t panic! Lots of kids safely use the Internet to make a difference, share Jesus, express their creativity, and voice their opinions.

Here are a few guidelines:

1. Involve your parents. They know what’s safe and what isn’t.

2. Don’t share personal information, such as your home address or your secret crush.

3. Don’t communicate with someone who makes abusive comments to you.

4. Make your comments to others positive.

5. Ask yourself, “Would I be embarrassed if Jesus saw this?”
