Spending Money We Don't Have

Most of you have probably heard your parents and others using words like "unemployment" and "recession" and "debt crisis" and other such confusing terms. The bottom line is that a lot of people (and countries) are spending a lot more money than they bring in. And it just seems that nobody is learning their lesson!

The Bible has a lot to say about how to handle money, including this passage: "Let no debt remain outstanding" (Romans 13:8). Simply put, pay your bills on time!

The United States and many other countries are not paying their bills on time. Yes, there are rules the say, "Hey, [insert country name], you have reached your limit! You cannot spend any more money!" But just like a football team that moves the goalposts, countries keep changing the amount their government can spend! It's called "raising the debt limit."

You and I cannot raise our personal "debt limit" and just keep spending. But governments don't seem to be paying attention to counsel like that found in Romans 13:8. In fact, governments are spending so much money that many people say we're "stealing" it from your generation, who will have to pay it back!

Here's a clever little video that I hope will help drive these points home!
