No you don't have to be perfect. Only Jesus is perfect, He doesn't expect it of us. B)
Blessed Assurance! Jesus is mine!

In my opinion, perfection, for people here on this earth, is impossible to reach. It means living a lifestyle with no sin at all whatsoever. Only God can be perfect. To go to heaven, you don't have to be perfect. I believe that you just have to follow God, and ask for forgiveness for your sins. You also have to be kind to others and live by the Bible (specifically the Ten Commandments). I haven't done extensive research or anything on this, but this is what I've learned and what I believe.
Psalm 86:15 - But you, O Lord, are a God merciful and gracious, slow to anger and abounding in steadfast love and faithfulness.

This is one of my favorite verses :)

I LOVE CHOCOLATE!

Nobody is perfect so if that was the case then nobody would be in Heaven.
You may not have a special life.... But you make life special.
Ps. I got that from a TV show!

Em......they said it all......I got nothing to say......apart from the fact that I wish to be prefect, but I can't, but I am happy for God's grace and mercy, and for Jesus' love and sacrifice which I am still trying to learn about. :)
So let me sing for the love
Let me love for the lost
Let me lose all I have
For what I found on the cross
Let me trust you with my life
Let me live to give you praise
Lord, let me praise you
For the grace by which I'm saved
Lord, let me sing

- Chorus of "Let me sing" by Andrew Peterson

We must be perfect in our imperfection, and even though our perfection is imperfect, we have to be as perfectly perfect as our imperfect selves will let us.

"Perfect" just lost its meaning... :S

nobody is perfect, thats not to say we shouldnt try to live "good" lives (and remember "none is good except the father in heaven" Luke 18:19) but we need to remember that the bible says "for it is by grace you have saved through faith, not of works lest any man should boast" (ephesians 2:9)

Perfection is possible. Inthe bible it says we can do all things through Christ who strengthens us. If you read revelation you will also know that perfection is required for those that will be translated

"Be ye therefore perfect even as my Father, which is in heaven, is perfect." Matthew 5:48

"As obedient children, not fashioning yourselves according to the former lusts in your ignorance: But as he which hath called you is holy, so be ye holy in all manner of conversation (behavior); Because it is written, Be ye holy; for I am holy." 1 Peter 1:14-16

There is really no easy answer to this question. I'll start off by saying this: we, in our sinful state, do not have the capability of being "perfect". Why? "Because the carnal mind is enmity against God: for it is not subject to the law of God, neither indeed can be." Romans 8:7

However, just because we sinful flabby human beings can't be perfect on our own, that doesn't mean that perfection and holiness is impossible. After all, Jesus was a human, and yet he "knew no sin." He was perfect.

Why? How?

Well, Jesus said that He did nothing of Himself. What He saw His Father do, He copied (John 5:19). He sought the will of His Father (John 5:30). He spoke only the things that His Father taught Him (John 8:28). And He refused to honour Himself, always giving glory to God, and allowing God to honour and glorify Him (John 8:54)

This post is getting lengthy so I'll just close by saying this: it IS possible for us to reach perfection. But only through the renewing power of Christ. Perfection doesn't mean that we won't make mistakes, that we won't trip and fall on the path of righteousness. What we do is accept the sinless life that Christ lives and ask Him to purge sins out of our life.

I hope that makes sense.

Genesis 17:1 And when Abram was ninety years old and nine, the Lord appeared to Abram, and said unto him, I am the Almighty God; walk before me, and be thou perfect.

Matthew 5:48 Be ye therefore perfect, even as your Father which is in heaven is perfect.

James 1:4 But let patience have her perfect work, that ye may be perfect and entire, wanting nothing.
Can't find the Ellen White quote that says, (paraphrased) With God, a command is an enabling. :) Also, remember Philippians 4:13 ;)

I hope not- because I'm sure I'll never get there. I mean even if you could act perfectly- and just for discusion- what does acting perfectly entail. Is it just avoiding bad? Or is it doing some sort of good acts? Is it both? And even if you could act perfectly- could you really say that all your motives for acting perfectly were pure?

Haha, Thanks, looks like I'm a bit late to the party! What was your question Quirky- I can't seem to find it- it's pretty hard to see from halfway across the world ;)

OK, so I believe that the reason we aren't perfect is because we're human. The Bible says by beholding we become changed. So if we spend enough time with God, we will grow to love Him and disobeying Him will pain us. We'll naturally become closer to Him in our thoughts and actions. However, I think you can't become perfect while on this earth.
"But thanks be to God, which giveth us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ." 1 Corinthians 15:57 Jesus makes up the difference. In Him we are perfect and made complete. We will also be changed at the second coming. "For this corruptible shall have put on incorruption, and this mortal shall have put on immortality, then shall be brought to pass the saying that is written, Death is swallowed up in victory." 1 Corinthians 15:54

Oh, @Tim33, I remember what I was saying before. I said that your question of what perfection really is was a valid question and I want to know what the answer is....
