No.... The bible strictly says in Isaiah 58:13 "If thou turn away thy foot from the sabbath, from doing thy pleasure on my holy day, and call the sabbath a delight, the holy day of the lord honorable, and shalt honor him, not doing your own ways, nor Finding your own pleasure, nor speaking your own words," Don't you think it would be doing your own pleasure? I mean, This is Gods day, and he want's you to spend the day with him. Is swimming spending time with him? No. Hope this helps! God Bless!

A quick note on that Bible verse about not doing your own "pleasure" on the Sabbath. You probably know that originally that verse was written in Hebrew. What it meant in that language was that a person shouldn't be involved in regular business transactions and stuff like that on the Sabbath. For example, if you run a sno-cone stand during the week, it shouldn't be open on Sabbath!

It is a bit unfortunate that the translators chose the word "pleasure" for that verse. It sorta points people in a direction that probably isn't quite what the author intended! —Randy Fishell, Guide editor

I peronally think that it's OK, as long as you remember that it is sabbath. it's fine if you swim on sabbath, but just remember that this is God's day, and he wants it to be kinda special. Don't treat it just like another day, try to lift God up in whatever you do. :side:

To me, it is a lot better to be swimming in a lake or a river, than in a pool on Sabbath because then you are at least out in nature. As long as you don't have to [pay to swim it is OKL:

I agree to some extent, but I mean, if you are like at a lake and in God's nature and stuff, and you don't get really rowdy with your friends, I think it would be OK to swim...even swimming in a swimming pool or floating around in the water and relaxing, because the Sabbath is a day of rest. The Sabbath was made for man, not man for the Sabbath. I think that if you think too much about what not to do on the Sabbath, like the Pharisees, the Sabbath will become almost a burden. I'm not saying you should go and party or hang out with your non-Christian friends at their house, I'm just saying that I think doing things in nature, like swimming, is OK to do on the Sabbath . I mean, swimming gets more controversy than things like hiking it seeming like, and I think that hiking requires more exertion. That kind of confuses me...

I don't go swimming on the Sabbath. A friend of mine does. My parents would not want me to go swimming on Sabbath. It's too cold for swimming right now! :)

I think it is okay to go swimming on Sabbath but you should not go to a public one because you have to pay. Swim outside in your own pool is okay though. I think.

I see absolutely no problem with swimming on Sabbath,, as lomg as you are swimming at a private pool. If you have to go to a public pool where there are lifeguards that are paid for they're work then i would not go, but if you or a friend have your own pool then i think it is perfectly fine!

Because swimming is for your own pleasure I would refrain from doing it on sabbath but on rare special occasions it is okay.

but think of it this way, o ye naysayers: if it is 108 degrees Fahrenheit, would you need to cool yourself down?

I don't see what's wrong with it.
All you're doing is exercising, and God wants us to keep our bodies in shape!

I don't really see what is wrong with it. If you aren't playing games or training than I think it is a good idea to actually have a wade in a pool in the afternoon or something. When we were at a Pathfinder camp, we camped at Somerset Dam. It was Sabbath and it was very hot so we just about had to get in the water because of the heat. But we didn't play games and we were spending time in God's nature. Then we sat in the water for Closing Sabbath which was ok. We weren't breaking any Sabbath laws so I personally think it is ok just as long as you don't muck around or train. ;)

I always kinda wondered about that and I used to ask my parents if I could but they always said no
So I think i guess because on the Sabbath, it's our day to spend time with God and if we go swimming, were kind of doing what we want
instead of doing what God wants us to do for him

I think swimming on sabbath is definitely ok. "but the seventh day is a sabbath to the LORD your God. On it you shall not do any work, neither you, nor your son or daughter, nor your male or female servant, nor your animals, nor any foreigner residing in your towns." Is swimming work? Nope. In fact, sabbath is the only time I swim. I'm too busy during the week lol. And as soon as sundown comes, I have to get back to work at whatever I need to do. When you swim on sabbath, you're not NOT keeping the sabbath holy. It's kinda like hiking...only in te water...you can just keep on walking and having a pleasant time, and you can play games like tag and frisbee and hide and seek. How is putting that in water any different?
